Interview Feedback
31/05/12
1.) Masoud Bakhshizadeh (Level 4)
Masoud spoke with a good level of grammatical accuracy during the interview and used a variety of interesting verbs. He maintained the past simple throughout his report of his last holiday and was able to provide lots of examples of free time activities and reasons why people like to exercise. When discussing regularity of actions, Masoud should remember to use ‘once’ and ‘twice’ a week rather than ‘one/two times a week’. He should review the difference in usage and meaning of the words ‘other’ and ‘another’ to avoid mistakes like ‘another countries’.
2.) Mehrdad Nematolahi (Level 4)
Mehrdad understood my questions well and used a number of devices to expand his answers including: a past simple, comparative adjectives and a range of modals for advice. A couple of mistakes Mehrdad needs to correct before his next assessment are; his use of articles e.g., ‘go to (the) park’ and ‘the people...’ and when to use, and not use auxiliary verbs e.g., ‘it depends on where do I go’.
3.) Maryam Ashrafi (Level 4)
Maryam was able to provide a wide range of ways to remain healthy as well as a long list of free time activities. She understood my questions well and tried hard to expand her answers. Unfortunately, however, every time she used the present simple with herself as the subject she added the verb ‘to be’ which resulted in a large amount of her speech being grammatically incorrect. She also failed to use the past simple when relating a story from the past. Both of these areas should be attended to as a matter of priority.
4.) Sara Rozitalab (Level 4) ABSENT/100
5.) Faezeh Golkarfard (Level 4)
Faezah understood my questions well and was able to provide detailed and interesting answers to my questions. She maintained the past tense when telling a story from the past, included a wide range of both general and topic-specific vocabulary and a variety of adverbs of frequency. Although modals were used to give advice, they should also have been used to express possible problems people ‘could’ have when going on holiday. She must also try to get out of the habit of repeating the question in her answer if she desires her speech to sound more natural.
6.) Zohreh Rahemi (Level 4)
Zohreh understood my questions well and was able to provide a number of examples for the ways and reasons people remain healthy and a variety of free time activities. Although she did self-correct one her preposition mistakes, they do generally need some attention from Zohreh. She must also revise her use of definite/indefinite articles.
7.) Maryam Hoseini (Level 4)
Maryam is clearly very concerned with the accuracy of what she produces and subsequently speaks quite slowly to allow herself the time to think through the question and plan her response, which is good to see. Her vocabulary and sentence structure are both of a high standard. At this stage, Maryam should be using contracted forms in speaking much more than she is as it adds a level of authenticity. She may also want to try introducing a tense/form other than the present simple for a bit of variety.
8.) Elnaz Bandeh (Level 4)
Elnaz’s pronunciation is fine and she was able to understand my questions without requiring repetitions. She used accurate expressions of frequency and provided some good examples of what she likes to do in her free time. Elnaz needs to spend some time focusing on improving her grammar, in particular the difference between go to + article + place and go + activity and the need for the past simple when telling a story of something that happened in the past.
9.) Hamid Mortezaei (Level 4)
Hamid was able to understand my questions without difficulty and his pronunciation is fine. He provided a detailed introduction and included some useful expressions including ‘harmful for your health’. Hamid needs to pay some attention to his sentence structure as there were a couple of occasions when, although speaking with fluency, His lack of structure made it quite difficult to understand what he was trying to say.
10.) Mohamad Ali Imeni (Level 4)
Mohamad provided a detailed introduction to the interview and was able to understand my questions without requiring repetition. His topic-based vocabulary was very good and his pronunciation was fine aside from the word ‘suit’ which was pronounced, ‘sweet’. Unfortunately, Mohomad did not use the past simple to refer to events of the past and confused his present and past simple when talking about routine actions. He must remind himself of the necessity of this along with taking some time out to focus on sentence structure.
11.) Elahe Moshiri (Level 4)
Elahe spoke and listened with confidence and was able to provide grammatically accurate examples of what her daily routine involves as well as the ways in which she remains healthy. She used the past simple consistently throughout her story from the past and self corrected a couple of subject mistakes. Unfortunately she did misunderstand my question of ‘where do you usually go on vacation?’ by responding with how regularly she goes and rather than using ‘twice’ she said ‘two times a year’ which sounds quite unnatural. Some listening practice on ‘wh’ questions may help avoid this mistake in the future.
12.) Hosein Razaei (Level 4)
Hosein expanded his answers well and included a present perfect to express a plan he has made for the future, which worked well. His explanation of his daily routine was detailed and grammatically accurate and he used modals when giving advice on how to stay fit and healthy. Unfortunately, Hosein made a number of mistakes with the use of his past simple which he will need to correct before he moves on to more complex forms.
13.) Roholah Totonchi (Level 4)
Roholah provided an interesting and detailed introduction and was generally very accurate with his grammar. He has a good bank of topic-based vocabulary and was able to provide a correctly structured explanation of his daily routine. Roholah repeatedly used the adverb ‘usually’ which he should consider interspersing with similar adverbs such as: ‘often’ or ‘mainly’ in order to add a bit of variety. He must also correct the commonly made mistake of saying ‘come to home at...’.
14.) Elnaz Ardalan (Level 4)
Elnaz’s pronunciation is good and she spoke with a high level of fluency. Her use of prepositions was good and she maintained the use of the past simple throughout her story of something that happened three weeks ago. Although she provided a detailed introduction, she must beware not to make it sound too rehearsed. She should also watch her subject verb agreements going forward.
15.) Mohamad Sadegh Mehrshad (Level 4)
Mohamad was obviously very keen to show me what he knew and as a result spoke for a full six minutes before I was able to interrupt and ask him a question of my own. He gave some good examples of his free time activities and ways to remain healthy and included some nice, informal vocabulary such as, ‘couch potato’. Unfortunately, as I was only able to ask Mohamad one question, I am unable to assess his listening skills which are an important part of the interview. A minute introduction is what he should be aiming for which would allow him a lot more accuracy in sentence structure and ensure overall meaning isn’t lost.
16.) Somayeh Moharami (Level 4)
Somayeh provided a grammatically accurate account of her daily routine and self-corrected one of her subject verb agreement mistakes, which is good to see. She was able to provide a varied list of her free time activities and ways to remain to healthy. Unfortunately however, Somayeh’s answers where lacking fluency which may be improved by increased speaking practice in her free time. Spending some time revising sentence structure will also increase her fluency going forward.
17.) Saeideh Enjavinejad (Level 4)
Saeideh used a mixture of less common adverbs of frequency including ‘I hardly ever...’ and ‘I generally...’, both of which worked well in context. She was able to present he daily routine in detail and understood my questions without hesitation. Saeideh must be careful not to forget to include necessary articles or main verbs in her sentences and revise not mix up nouns, verbs and adjectives.
18.) Farzad Keshavarz (Level 4)
Farzad appeared to be very nervous during the interview but spoke with an extremely high level of grammatical accuracy throughout. He took his time constructing his sentences which allowed him the time to ensure they were correct. Farzad’s listening skills are not as advanced as his other skills and his struggles in this area may have contributed to his nerves. I would suggest Farzad spend as much of his free time as possible practising his listening skills as they are holding him back from even higher grades at this point.
19.) Fatemeh Hamedani (Level 4)
Fatemeh understood my questions well and her pronunciation is fine. She provided a detailed and grammatically accurate account of ways to remain healthy and she has a good range of both topic-specific and general vocabulary. Although Fatemeh began her story of the past in the correct tense, she did not continue with it. This should be an area of her focus going forward. It is important she becomes comfortable with the past simple before she moves on to more complex forms.
20.) Shoeyb Lanjavi (Level 4)
Shoeyb was able to understand my questions without any issues and spoke with confidence and fluency throughout. He included a conditional form, his pronunciation is fine and he clearly enjoys communicating in English. However, he must be careful not to speak too quickly as he prevents himself from having the time to think about his answers before responding. His listening, speaking and vocabulary skills are all fine but he must now focus on improving the accuracy of his general grammar if he is looking to achieve higher marks.
