Feedback: Level 4 Group 48
Sunday 1st July, 9am GMT
Students have been assessed on four separate criteria: grammar, fluency, pronunciation and vocabulary.
1. Mohamd Taghi Sharifi
Mohamd spoke fluently and with good pronunciation. He used a good variety of vocabulary and answered all questions correctly and fully, providing a good amount of detail. Question 13 wasn’t specifically about your last holiday, but about possible problems you might encounter more generally, so take care to listen a little more carefully. Everything else was very good.
2. Komail Sohrabi
Komail made a good attempt, but his answers were variable. While he was sometimes able to offer full answers (e.g. Questions 1 and 10), some of his answers did not seem completely relevant (e.g. Questions 2 and 13). His answer to Question 13 was a little odd – he told me his last vacation was wonderful but that he had had an accident and didn’t really have a good time. Not quite what I had asked! He needs to improve on his listening and his grammar, particularly.
3. Marjan Moayeri
Marjan did brilliantly. All her answers were incredibly fluent and detailed and she showed a good knowledge of vocabulary. I was particularly impressed with her sentence structure in Question 8 (“As you know, Iran has conservative clothing…”) and Question 12 (“For example, if I go to the north of Iran…”). She answered Question 13 appropriately, using sentences such as “If I fly.... I might…” showing she has understood the question correctly.
4. Farzaneh Peyro
Farzaneh struggled to hear/understand some of the questions, but answered most questions very well. She did not always volunteer information, but was happy to answer when pressed for detail. Her answers to Questions 5 and 10 were particularly fluent. Take care not to forget the verbs in your sentences – e.g. “People have to ….. modest clothing”.
5. Asiyeh Rozitalab
Asiyeh spoke very deliberately and slowly, which sounded a little unnatural at times, but it made her answers very clear and easy to understand. I really liked her unique answer to Question 1, and she answered most questions fully and well. She answered Questions 5 and 6 particularly well, using adverbs of frequency to good effect. She understood Question 13, as demonstrated by her use of the word ‘maybe’, but she struggled to formulate a full answer, with the result that it sounded more like a list than a sentence. A good attempt.
6. Mahdis Kabolahi
Mahdis was incredibly concise and did not volunteer very much information. Her answers were often correct but very direct. A little more detail would be nice! She used some good vocabulary in Question 3 (e.g. high calorie foods) and she offered a fairly detailed answer to Question 10. She was very precise throughout, but her answer to Question 13 did not talk about possible problems. Instead, she told me that on her last vacation she had an accident, her flight was cancelled, etc etc. If this is true, it’s very unfortunate! Remember the question is about possibilities.
7. Mohamad Khoshnod
Mohamad did very well. Despite being a little nervous at the beginning, he answered most questions fluently and with a good amount of detail. His answers Questions 5 and 6 were particularly good, and he used adverbs of frequency very well. His answers to Questions 11 and 12 were also detailed and good. Just remember to say “I like to sunbathe” or “I like to go sunbathing” rather than “I take a sunbath”, and maybe try to brush up on your vocabulary a little more.
8. Keyvan Hekmat
Keyvan struggled throughout. He answered Questions 5 and 6 well, but most other answers lacked detail and form, and I had to repeat most questions several times. His answer to Question 13 seemed particularly odd, as he listed various forms of transport “aeroplane, train, limousine…” He would benefit to check his vocabulary and to practice listening more.
9. Ehsan Yosefi
Ehsan performed well throughout, offering full, detailed answers to most questions. His answers to Questions 1 and 10 were particularly good, as he showed a good level of fluency and detail. When talking about daily routines, try to use a wider variety of phrases, such as usually, sometimes, occasionally. Ehsan repeatedly said “After that…. After that….,” which is ok, but a little repetitive. His answer to Question 13 was very interesting. He suggested that the air conditioning might not work, that the sink might be clogged and that perhaps the toilet wouldn’t flush. Nobody else suggested these things. It showed a good knowledge of vocabulary.
10. Farideh Jahanbazi
Farideh answered all questions incredibly fluently and with good pronunciation. Question 13 posed the usual problems and she answered the question as though all possible problems had actually occurred to her during her last vacation. This is a very common mistake. Remember the question asks for possible problems that might occur. Otherwise very well done.
11. Sahar Favakeh
Sahar answered questions fluently and with good detail. I was particularly impressed with her vocabulary throughout, using phrases such as “When I eat meat, I trim visible fat,” “I eat in moderation,” “I eat small portions” in Question 3. In Question 11, she surprised me with unexpected vocabulary such as ‘parachuting’ and ‘paragliding’. She also answered Question 13 quite well, and demonstrated she understood the question by using the word ‘might’.
12. Mohsen Zarre
Mohsen really struggled. Many of the questions had to be repeated and/or rephrased several times, but still elicited the answer “I don’t know”. I think the sound quality must have been quite bad, but he was able to answer Questions 5 and 6 quite well. His adverbs of frequency were fairly good. Mohsen needs to improve on his listening skills – in answer to Question 11, he told me the time. He also needs to improve on his fluency by practicing his conversational skills with classmates.
13. Aida Omidvari
14. Aida did brilliantly. She was incredibly fluent and detailed in her answers and spoke confidently. I liked her reiteration in Question 1 – “No, I’m not. I do….., so no, I’m not a couch potato”. I was also impressed by her sentence structure in Question 12 – “If I go to the north, for example…” She also successfully understood and answered Question 13 – a question which many students struggle with. Well done.
15. Elmira Tavasoli
Elmira was fantastic. She delivered answers fluently and with good detail. Her answer to Question 3 demonstrated a good knowledge of vocabulary, and she answered Questions 5 and 6 with good use of adverbs of frequency. She surprised me with her vocabulary in Question 12, when she said she enjoys physical activities like hang-gliding. She also correctly understood and answered Question 13, suggesting that one “might miss the train” – something nobody else thought of.
16. Leila Namazi
Leila did very well and answered most questions fluently and correctly. I particularly liked her answer to Question 1, in which she went beyond talking about exercise and fitness and told me about her interests and all the things she does that prevents her from being a couch potato. A really original answer. She struggled to understand some questions (Questions 3 and 8) straight away, but generally answered them well once she had understood. Be careful with Question 13, which asks about possibilities rather than things that will definitely happen.
17. Hadi Yosefi
Hadi answered all questions remarkably well. He was a confident and fluent speaker throughout. His answers to Questions 5 and 6 were particularly good. He also understood Question 13 well and answered appropriately, using the word ‘maybe’. Take care with the pronunciation of the word ‘suit’ – it should be pronounced more like ‘soot’ than ‘sweet’.
18. Leila Baneshi
Leila did very well and answered questions fluently and with good detail. Her answer to Question 8 was particularly thorough, and she offered information on when she dresses formally and modestly and when she dresses more casually. She also understood Question 13 and answered it appropriately. Be careful with Question 2, which asks why people in general – not you personally - exercise.
19. Mohamad Ali Baniani
Mohamad answered most questions well and with a reasonable degree of fluency. He seemed a little nervous and looked very serious throughout. He answered Questions 1-4 well, but his answer to Question 5 was a little repetitive with frequent use of the phrase “After that… and after that….” I particularly liked his detailed response to Question 8, when he told me quite specifically what kinds of clothes he wears to work and when he dressed more casually. Mohamad could improve a little more on his grammar and sentence structure.
20. Parvaneh Rosta
Parvaneh answered most questions well. Her answers to Questions 2 and 3 were particularly good, as were her answers to Questions 11 and 12, despite her struggles to hear/understand questions sometimes. She used good phrases such as “I don’t… I avoid…” in questions regarding health and fitness. She did not understand Question 13, but otherwise she did well. Try to be a little more confident in yourself – this will improve your fluency.
Level 6
21. Reza Abaszadeh
Reza performed reasonably well. He seemed fairly confident and his pronunciation was good. He had a natural way of speaking, and used colloquial words such as ‘skinny’, which was good. Some of his answers were a little short and direct, when more detail would have been welcome. He did not seem to understand Questions 3, and he also seemed to struggle with some of the later questions (Questions 8, 10 and 15) – in which his answers did not really match the questions.
22. Saeed Naderipoor
Saeed tried very hard and answered most questions reasonably well. Some answers were a little too short, whereas some answers had a good amount of detail. His answer to Question 2 was very detailed and original. However, when it came to Question 3, he simply repeated his answer to Question 2 instead of elaborating on how lifestyle had changed in ways other than people’s eating habits. He could have talked about changes in technology and transport, for example. His answer to Question 4 was also largely repetitive. He seemed to struggle a little when talking about personality and feelings. However, he regained confidence when talking about music – something which he clearly feels passionately about.
