Feedback: Level 4 Groups 2 & 3
Students have been assessed on four separate criteria: grammar, fluency, pronunciation and vocabulary.
1. Efran Omidi
Efsan made a good attempt, but tended to give somewhat disjointed answers. He should try to speak in fuller sentences. He also lacked understanding for some of the questions (8, 13, 15), which he answered inaccurately. However, he did better with the earlier questions (1-7), and was able to tell me his daily routine successfully. He should work on his fluency to improve his marks.
2. Hadis Taheri
Hadis spoke fluently and answered all questions very well. She gave me a good variety of diet and exercise related ways she stays healthy (Question 3) and used adverbs of frequency well in Questions 5 and 7. I was particularly impressed with her answer to Question 8 – “I don’t work, but I think you should wear…,” and she used the words ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ accurately to describe dress code in Question 10. It would be better to use the word ‘could’ instead of ‘would’ in answer to Question 13 – i.e. “Someone could steal my bag,” not “Someone would be stole my bag”. She used ‘would be’ for most examples – remember for next time!
3. Farnaz Jamali
Farnaz seemed quite relaxed and confident, and this reflected positively in her answers. She spoke calmly and at a good pace. She answered all questions very well, especially Questions 8-10. She used the words ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t accurately to describe dress code in Question 10. However, she should note that the word ‘should’ is unnecessary in Question 3 because it simply asks what she does to stay healthy, not what she should do – it’s ok to say “I avoid junk food” instead of “I should avoid…” It would be better to use the word ‘could’ instead of ‘would’ in answer to Question 13 – i.e. “Someone could steal my bag,” not “Someone would be stole my bag”. She used ‘would be’ for most examples – remember for next time!
4. Zohre Galeh Daran
Zohre generally answered the questions very well. She did particularly well in the earlier questions – especially Question 3, which she answered with a lot of good detail. She also showed the ability to correct her own mistakes at times and was careful with her word order. A couple of her answers seemed a little confused, however – Questions 8 and 15, so she should try practicing these a little more. Zohre should also work on her pronunciation of the letters W and V, though I know it’s difficult!
5. Mohammad Ahmadi
Mohammad tried hard, but his answers were not always accurate and at times seemed a little confused – for example, Question 10: “I like casual dress code” and Question 3: “I get up at…” (more appropriate for Question 5). However, he did speak well when talking about his daily routines. Mohammad should take care to really listen to the questions and try to formulate his answers in his head before he speaks. It’s ok to take your time!
6. Sanaz Hoseini
Sanaz’s answers were sometimes a little too short and lacking in detail, but she was generally able to answer questions accurately. Her answers to Questions 5 and 6 were particularly strong, although they could have had a little more detail. She did not seem to understand Question 10 and misunderstood Question 11 – “I go shopping and relaxing and watch TV,” which sounds more like things she would do on a day off rather than on vacation. However, she answered Question 15 very well and was able to support her opinion with solid reasons.
7. Ramin Fereiduni - ABSENT
8. Azarnoosh Khalili
Azarnoosh performed very well. She answered the questions fluently and eloquently. Her answer to Question 8 was so detailed she covered Questions 9 and 10 in her answer. It’s demonstrates good knowledge of the subject when a student can elaborate on an answer. One small thing to remember – “I sleep well” not “I sleep good”. Well done.
9. Roohollah Roshan Nejad
Roohollah was interrupted twice during his interview, but he made a good attempt despite these interruptions. His answer to Question 8 was particularly good, as he elaborated and covered Question 9 too. In Question 1, it would have been better to say “No, I’m not. I rarely watch television” instead of “I sometimes watch television,” as ‘sometimes’, in this case, gives the wrong impression.
10. Hosein Bashir
Hosein did extremely well. He answered questions fluently and confidently and his pronunciation sounded very natural. His answers were often detailed and he elaborated well, giving good examples to support and enhance his statements. I particularly liked his answer to Question 3, in which he suggested a number of reasons why he thinks people exercise: “Some people exercise because…. Some people because…. I think lots of people exercise for their health….” His answer to Question 10 included both ‘they have to’ and ‘they cannot’, which were good alternatives to ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’. His answer to Question 13 included “maybe the flight will be bumpy”- perfect. Well done.
11. Hasan Beizayi
Hasan answered some questions very well, but struggled with others. His answers to Questions 1, 2, 5-9 were very good. Yet he failed to understand Questions 3 and 4, and his answer to Question 10 (“I like liberal clothes in my country”) wasn’t an accurate response. Though it was a mixed bag, his good answers were very good. He needs to work on developing his weaker questions for next time.
12. Elahe Ahmadi
Elahe’s time was unfortunately cut short, due to multiple technical interruptions. However, she maintained a positive attitude throughout and did very well despite the disruptions. She answered all questions (1 to 9) fluently and calmly, often providing good detail. Take care not to make Question 5 sound too much like a list: “take a shower, make up, get ready”. Instead, try using a few more conjuctions to make the sentence flow better.
13. Mohammad Reza
Mohammad Reza responded to questions fluently and with good detail. He suggested several good examples of how he stays healthy (Question 3), although take care with the verb in the sentence “I don’t smoke” (not “I don’t smoking”). His answer to Question 10 was incredibly detailed and he offered a good comparison between male and female dress codes. He also made good use of comparative sentences in Question 11. He needs to take care not to list possible problems in Question 13, but to try and make more fluid sentences.
14. Mohammad Rasool
Mohammad Rasool answered questions fluently and confidently. His answers were often quite detailed and full. There are a few small things he could improve on. For example, “I get up” sounds more natural than “I rise” and ‘stay at home’ rather than ‘stay in home’. He should also take care not to list possible problems in Question 13 (miss train, mechanical problems, get seasick), but to try and make more fluid sentences.
15. Iman Sheibani
Iman spoke very confidently and fluently. He spoke with a natural ease. He answered Questions 1-6 very well, but he should try to expand beyond exercise routines in Questions 5 and 6. He tended to mix his tenses a little in Question 13 – I would suggest sentences such as “My flight might be cancelled” or “Someone could steal my bag” when discussing possibilities. His answer to Question 15 was good, but seemed a little contradictory to his answer to Question 8.
16. Babak Ahmadi
Babak was thoughtful and careful, and it was clear that he was thinking before formulating his answers. He maintained a steady pace throughout and answered questions well. He should note that Question 2 is about people in general, so it is more appropriate to use ‘they’ instead of ‘I’. He answered Questions 5 and 6 well and made good use of adverbs of frequency. Don’t forget the verb in Question 10: “women should wear a long dress”. Good effort.
17. Meisam Ghasem Poor
Meisam was incredibly confident and answered the questions well despite an interruption in the middle. His pronunciation and fluency were particularly strong and he spoke very naturally. His answer to Question 10 was particularly good, as he used ‘must’ as well as ‘should’ to add variation and avoid repetition. Take care with Question 11: Either say “I prefer to go on a relaxing vacation” or “I prefer relaxing vacations,” not “I prefer to go relaxing vacation”. Meisam used a good conditional sentence in Question 14.
18. Raziyeh Azodi
Raziyeh was incredibly strong, so it was a shame her interview was curtailed by technical difficulties. Despite suffering interruptions, she performed very well and answered all questions (1 to 8) clearly and fluently. She provided several good examples of why people exercise (Question 2), and showed an ability to correct herself when she noticed a mistake (she corrected ‘more happy’ to ‘happier’). Her answer to Question 8, though cut short, began promisingly, and she was about to elaborate and cover Question 10 too, until our conversation came to an unfortunate end. Very well done.
19. Zahra Azodi
Zahra was conversational and easy to talk to. She answered all questions well, and in particular, Questions 5 and 6, which were full of detail. She needs to take care to listen closely to questions and make sure she is answering them appropriately – for example, her answer to Question 8 – though good – was more appropriate for Question 10. Her answer to Question 13 included “they might cancel my flight” – a perfect sentence. Well done.
20. Mohsen Dadar
Mohsen spoke very fluently and naturally and provided good detail in his answers. He showed a good knowledge of vocabulary, and was often able to construct full sentences that flowed well. Question 8 was particularly good, as he told me how he dresses differently depending on whether he is in the office or the factory. Question 10 was also strong, as he offered a good comparison between male and female dress codes. I liked his use of the conditional in Question 11 (“I prefer [to] go to [the] beach if I’ve got enough time. If not….”), though I wonder whether he meant ‘countryside’ or ‘park’ when he said ‘garden’?
21. Leila Dorostkar
Leila did very well and answered all questions fluently and with good understanding. She did particularly well in Questions 8-10, relating to clothing. She also did very well in Question 12, in which she showed a good knowledge of vocabulary and listed a good selection of activities. Leila could improve on Question 13 by learning set phrases such as “maybe the weather will be terrible” or “maybe my wallet will be stolen,” rather than mixing tenses: “maybe the weather be terrible… steal my wallet”.
22. Alireza Haghaani
Alireza spoke fluently and confidently and elaborated well on many of the questions. If anything, perhaps his answer to Question 5 was a little too detailed, as he listed minutely everything he does in the morning, including “I go to the bathroom, I brush my teeth, I take a shower, I dry my body”. It showed a good knowledge of relevant vocabulary, but was perhaps unnecessarily informative. Alireza should take a little more care to listen to questions. His answer to Question 2 was more appropriate for Question 3. His answer to Question 14 was very good, again demonstrating his strength in vocabulary.
23. Zohre Vafaa Poor
Zohre answered all questions very fluently and naturally, and she elaborated well on her answers by providing good additional information. She is the only one to have said “I don’t drink soda” and “I don’t pig out on fatty foods” (Question 3), which demonstrated good knowledge of vocabulary and colloquial English. “I hang out with my friends” (Question 6) is another good example of her use of colloquial language, which made her speech sound natural. In Question 13, she said she “got bumps when I fly” – does she mean “the flight might be bumpy”?
24. Marziyeh Gholami
Marziyeh answered questions very fluently and showed good understanding. She often elaborated well on her answers and provided good detail to enhance her answers. She did particularly well in Questions 8-10, in which she was able to give very full answers with good examples. She listed a good selection of outdoor activities in Question 12. In Question 13, she said she “got bumps from the flight” – does she mean “the flight might be bumpy”?
25. Alireza Moosavi
Alireza made a good attempt, despite his interview being cut short due to technical problems. He answered questions succinctly and showed good understanding of what was being asked of him. Alireza could have scored higher if he had provided more detail to some questions. His answer to Question 8, for example – “I wear formal clothes at work” – is correct, but he could have given more detail – a few examples of the type of clothes he might wear. Elaborating more on his answers would give him a better chance of showing understanding and knowledge of relevant vocabulary.
