Interview Feedback Level3 Group 1&3

1.) Zahra Mahmoodi

Zahra’s pronunciation is fine and she was able to provide detailed descriptions of her parents’ appearance. Her subject verb agreements were generally, accurate. Unfortunately, Zahra was unable to understand the question ‘Where do you live?’ which is something she should certainly be able to understand and answer at this stage. Going forward, she must attend to her incorrect inclusion of the verb ‘to be’, e.g., ‘I’m go camping...’, which is a common mistake for beginners.

2.) Reza Bani Hashemi

Reza both listened and spoke with confidence and expanded and explained his answers without having to be prompted. He has a good range of vocabulary which he is able to put into practice well. Unfortunately, however, he made a couple of mistakes with his use of articles and when and when not to use them, e.g., ‘listen to the music’, which should be his main focus going forward.

3.) Mohammad Amin Raoofat

Mohammad Amin understood my questions well and expanded his answers without encouragement. He self-corrected a couple of subject verb agreement mistakes which shows a nice attention to detail. A couple of areas for Mohammad Amin to focus on going forward would be to ensure he correctly differentiates between the commonly confused verbs, ‘to study’ and ‘to teach’ and the verb and adjective, ‘to like’ and ‘alike’.

4.) Seyedeh Marziyeh Haghighat Zia Bari

Marziyeh’s pronunciation is fine and was able to expand her answers without too much difficultly. She also self-corrected a number of her mistakes which shows a nice attention to detail and desire for accuracy. Marziyeh would benefit from a little more listening practice as it was necessary for me to repeat a few of my questions in order for her to understand. She must also focus on her use of plural nouns.

5.) Seyedeh Maryam Haghighat Zia Bari

Maryam’s subject verb agreements were generally very accurate and she was able to include some comparatives when discussing her family. She also self-corrected a couple of her mistakes, which is good to see. Maryam tried very hard to expand her answers but must be aware of losing the fluency of her speech by keeping her sentences so long and with so much hesitation. For future speaking assessments I would recommend Maryam try to make her sentences more concise and allow herself the time to think about what she wants to say before beginning her answer. This will help with clarity.

6.) Mehdi Barzegar

Mehdi seemed to be quite nervous during the interview but has good listening skills in English and was able to understand my questions without difficultly. He self-corrected a preposition mistake which shows a good attention to detail but must be careful not to let the desire for accuracy impair his fluency attempts. He should try to get some more speaking practice in his free time to allow for more confidence and improved pronunciation.

7.) Mohamad Yazdani

Mohamad’s pronunciation is fine and he regularly contracted subjects and verbs and self-corrected some of his mistakes. He used the past simple correctly in explaining where he was born and understood most of my questions without difficulty. Mohamad does, however, need to work on his speaking which at present it quite disjointed and needs a higher level of fluency to ensure the listener does not lose track of what he is saying. He should try and get as much speaking practice as possible in his free time and try not to be so concerned about his accuracy that his fluency is affected.

8.) Afsane Shahravan

Afsane understood my questions with ease and was able to both listen and respond in a very relaxed manner. Her subject verb agreements were accurate and she self-corrected mistakes. Afsane needs to make sure she doesn’t confuse her nouns and adjectives and should consider trying to introduce some more complex forms into her speech, such as the present continuous or future simple in order to further increase her marks.

9.) Zahra Parsayi

Zahra’s pronunciation is good and she is both a very relaxed listener and speaker who developed her answers without prompting. She has a good range of vocabulary which she was able to use well throughout the interview. Unfortunately, Zahra made a couple of mistakes which affected her overall mark. She must be sure to not make the common mistake of confusing ‘until’, ‘since’ and ‘for’ and of including ‘to’ with some –ing hobbies, e.g ‘go to shopping’.

10.) Navid Mirza

Navid understood all of my answers without confusion and was able include a wide range of language devices into his speech, including the ‘going to’ future and a basic conditional, which is excellent to see at this level. Navid clearly has a good grasp of the English language but needs to push himself more in order to achieve the grades he is capable of getting. He was unwilling to expand or develop his answers without me pushing him which is a shame because I would liked to have seen what he could have produced with a little more effort.

11.) Roya Peyrani

Roya’s spoke with confidence throughout the interview and produced well-developed and detailed answers to my questions. Almost all of her subject verb agreements were accurate. Roya confused the adjective ‘scientific’ with the noun ‘science’ and slightly misunderstood my question of where to go shopping in Shiraz but these are minor errors. Going forward, Roya should look to try and introduce some more complex forms such as a future simple or a conditional which I think she is easily capable of.

12.) Niloofar Niroo

Niloofar is a confident speaker who was able to include some useful devices such as comparisons and some simple conditionals into her speech without difficultly. She also self-corrected a subject verb agreement error which shows a good attention to detail. Unfortunately, Niloofar made a number of mistakes with her he/she subjects which is a very basic error she should not be making at this point and one which she definitely look at attending to in order to prevent fossilisation.

13.) Behrooz Korooni

Behrooz’s pronunciation is fine and self-corrected some of his subject verb agreements which shows a desire for accuracy. His physical descriptions of his parents was very detailed and this was one area in which he possessed enough topic-specific vocabulary to expand his answers. Unfortunately, Behrooz misunderstood a number of my questions so I would suggest he try to get as much listening practice as possible in his free time. He could also spend some time on countable and uncountable nouns and their quantifiers.

14.) Mansoor Kheradmand

Mansoor’s pronunciation is fine, his subject verb agreements were mainly accurate and he understood my question without difficulty. Although he clearly wanted to expand, his answers were very short as a result of a lack of vocabulary. Focussing on obtaining some more vocabulary at this stage will really help Mansoor feel more confident in his speaking. he must also pay attention to his he/she subject use.

15.) Nahid Deilami

Nahid’s pronunciation is fine and she was able to differentiate between the use of the past simple and the past continuous well. She also included a comparative adjective when discussing her family. Unfortunately, her general ability to communicate with even a basic level of fluency in English is hampered by a lack of two things: vocabulary and confidence. Nahid should focus on obtaining some more vocabulary to allow herself the chance to express what she wants to. She should also try to have more faith in herself and her answers and to try not to repeat words when trying to decide if she has spoken correctly e.g ‘....brother. Brother? Yes, brother’.

16.) Shahin Khoshvaghti

Shahin’s pronunciation is good and he understood my questions with ease. He clearly has a fair grip on the English language but only provided very short answers to my questions, not allowing himself the opportunity to show what he was capable of. Shahin needs to try harder during assessments like these and should be pushing himself to show off his skills rather than providing the most basic answers possible. Although accurate for this particular interview, I am fairly confident this mark in not a true reflection of Shahin’s capabilities which is a real shame.

17.) Ashkan Sahar Khiz

Ashkan’s listening skills are excellent and he understood my questions very well, even when I purposefully spoke a little quicker as a test. He tried hard to expand his answers and his pronunciation is fine for this level. Unfortunately, Ashkan made a number of basic grammatical mistakes, including he/she subject confusion and the unnecessary inclusion of the verb ‘to be’ e.g., ‘I’m look like...’. Going forward, Ashkan should focus on his grammar, and later his speaking, in order to bring his productive skills up to the same high standard of his listening skills.

18.) Atke Haji Mohamadi

Atke listened to my question with care and understood them well. Her answers were thoughtful and included a past simple and a comparative adjective but her subject verb agreements need work. Although she tried very hard to expand her answers, her fluency was lost through a lack of accuracy and a number of breaks in her speech. It is great she is so keen to develop her answers but I would suggest Atke focus on providing shorter, more accurate and concise answers to conversational questions in the future rather than trying to overly expand them and run the risk of the listener losing comprehension.

19.) Afsar Keshtkar

Afsar obviously feels very comfortable with English at this level and is a very listener and speaker. Her answers were very delivered in a very clear and concise manner with minimal hesitation. She self-corrected a he/she subject mistake which shows a nice attention to detail and included a range of adverbs of frequency. Unfortunately though, she did fall into the common trap of confusing when and when not to include the verb ‘to be’, which she forgot altogether on occasion. She must also spend some time working on her personal and possessive pronouns.

20.) Ehsan Keshtkar

Ehsan’s pronunciation is fine and he understood my questions well. He included a basic conditional and some adverbs of frequency when discussing his free time activities and tried hard to expand his answers. Ehsan should spend some time trying to become more confident in his speaking as at present he is appears to be too worried about making a mistake. The result of this is that he speaks slowly and wearily which affects the fluency of his speech.

21.) Khatereh Dehghani

Khatareh’s pronunciation is fine and her subject verb agreements were good. She clearly wanted to develop her answers but was held back by a lack of vocabulary and confidence which meant she often failed to finish her sentence. She also a struggled to understand a number of my questions without requiring a repetition which undoubtedly knocked her confidence further. As a priority, I would recommend Khatereh focus on obtaining more basic vocabulary and getting as much listening practice as possible in her own time.

22.) Maryam Ariyan Far

Maryam’s pronunciation is fine and she seems to be very confident in her listening and speaking in English. Her topic-specific vocabulary is good although she confused the verbs ‘to have’ and ‘to be’ when describing someone’s physical appearance which is something she should look to correct immediately. Although it is great to be so confident in speaking and listening, Maryam must ensure she does not relax too much so as to make errors through a lack of attention. On a couple of occasions she picked up on a key word in my question and quickly provided an answer which wasn’t, in fact, quite what I was asking. Taking a bit of time to check she has fully understood the question will help Maryam avoid losing marks.

23.) Zinat Hamrahi

Zinat’s pronunciation is fine and the differentiation between the use of the past and present simple was good. Some mistakes were self-corrected which shows a nice attention to detail and most of my questions were understood well, although some needed repeating. Zinat is slightly held back by a lack of useful vocabulary which should be the first point of attention going forward. Some free time listening practice may also help to prevent such difficulty in comprehension in the next assessment situation.

24.) Bahare Sasani Poor

Bahahre’s listening skills are excellent and she responded to my questions with a high level of fluency, in a very relaxed manner. Her vocabulary is varied and allowed her to provide detailed descriptions of her relatives. One area in which she made a couple of mistakes was in her subject verb agreements which she will need to correct before being able to get the marks she is truly capable of. I would also recommend she look to introduce some more complex grammatical forms such as a conditional or simple future to further increase her marks.
