Interview Feedback Level 3 Grope 1&2

1.) Forugh Mohamadi

Forugh clearly feels very at ease with communicating in English, both listening and responding in an extremely relaxed manner. Her range of vocabulary and pronunciation is good and she responds to questions naturally, without any repetition of the question. Forugh did make a couple of fairly simple mistakes during her interview, including the confusion of the ‘he/she’ subject and the use of ‘to      do –ing’ when talking about ‘relaxing’.  Going forward, she should look to amend these errors and try to include some more complex grammatical forms into her speech to further increase her marks.

2.) Farideh Mohamadi

Farideh’s pronunciation is fine and she was able to use the correct structure when discussing hobbies. She was able to understand the majority of my questions but confused a couple of ‘wh-‘ questions which she must look to improve on. She must also try harder to expand her answers; obtaining more vocabulary and getting some more general English speaking practice should help with this.

3.) Hamidreza Chubineh

Hamidreza included a nice range of structures during the interview and was able to present his free time activities in a grammatically correct way. He did very well when differentiating between his siblings, using object pronouns without difficulty and self-corrected a plural noun mistake. Hamidreza must be aware that when asked ‘what does she look like?’, he is being asked for a physical description  rather than a comparison with another family member and needs to push himself harder to expand his answers, without prompt.

4.) Maryam Zahiri

Maryam’s pronunciation is good and she was able to correctly include, and maintain, the use of the past simple when talking about a recent holiday. She self-corrected a couple of her mistakes and included some adverbs of frequency when talking about free time activities although she did incorrectly use the present continuous to discuss habits. She needs to work on expressing hobbies and remember that the verb ‘to be’ is not always necessary.

5.) Hamed Samsam Doost

Hamed’s pronunciation is fine and he possesses some suitable topic-specific vocabulary. He tried hard during the interview but unfortunately he was let down by a lack of basic sentence structure and useful vocabulary which meant he was able to start his answers, but often struggled to finish them. Hamed must try to get some more listening practice in his free time and would benefit from learning fixed expressions/responses until he becomes more confident with how to put together sentences in English.

6.) Majid Hoseini

Majid listened to my questions very carefully and was thoughtful and took time with his answers. He was able to differentiate between his siblings well, using object pronouns without difficulty. Accuracy is clearly very important to Majid but he must try to obtain some more vocabulary and confidence with simple grammatical forms in order to produce the language he desires.

7.) Zahra Ardebili

Zahra self-corrected on a number of occasions, including present simple and present continuous confusion. She was also able to rephrase her answers if she knew her initial response was incorrect but was unsure how to amend it which is great to see at this level. Unfortunately Zahra lost marks because her listening as she requested a large number of questions be repeated. She also forgot to include some articles, such as. ‘My mother is (a) housewife’. These are two areas on which she should look to work in the immediate future.

8.) Maryam Fadaei

Maryam’s pronunciation is good and she self-corrected some of her he/she subject mistakes. She understood my questions well and concentrated hard on trying to produce grammatically accurate responses. Although accuracy is very important, fluency is too and Maryam needs to try harder to expand and develop her answers, without having to be pushed, if she is to obtain higher marks; even if this means making some small grammatical mistakes in the process.

9.) Soodabeh Sameti

Soodabeh is a very confident communicator in English and tried hard to provide thoughtful and well-developed answers to my questions. She used, and maintained the past simple when discussing a recent holiday and included a simple conditional form correctly. Soodabeh made a couple of preposition and personal pronoun mistakes which she should look to focus on going forward and must remember the ‘go –ing’ format when talking about hobbies e.g, ‘I go swimming’.

10.) Reza Eshaghi Doost

Reza’s pronunciation is good and his subject verb agreements were accurate throughout. He has well-developed listening skills, clarifying some questions before answering, but needs to push himself to produce more detailed  answers in order to show the examiner what he is capable of. Next time he should look to introduce some slightly more complex forms such as a simple conditional or future form which I am sure he would not find too difficult.

11.) Ali Khoob Yar

Ali’s pronunciation is fine and he understood my questions without difficulty. He self-corrected a couple of subject verb agreement mistakes and included some good expressions of frequency when discussing free time activities. Unfortunately, Ali’s answers were quite short, which is something he should look to work on going forward. He must also spend some time revising how to express hobbies and remember to include suitable verbs and omit articles, where necessary.

12.) Fatemeh Sadat Dashtaki

Fatemeh’s pronunciation is fine and she was able to understand most of my questions without requiring repetition. She presented her free time activities in a grammatically accurate manner and appears to have an adequate level of topic-specific vocabulary for this level. Unfortunately, Fatemeh made a number of mistakes with articles which dramatically affected her fluency and was unable to present either the days of the week or the months of the year correctly. Her listening and speaking skills are fine but she must work on her basic grammar and general vocabulary.

13.) Forugh Baneshi

Forugh’s pronunciation is good she has a good range of vocabulary. Her listening and speaking skills are both excellent and she provided clear, detailed answers to my questions. Unfortunately Forugh lost marks on her grammar as she made a few mistakes with her subject verb agreements and confused the ‘go –ing’ (go shopping) and the base form (watch tv) structures when discussing her free time activities. She needs to work on these two areas in order to bring her grammar in line with her communicative skills.

14.) Ghasem Miri

Ghasem’s range of vocabulary and pronunciation are both fine and he understood most of my answers without difficulty, although he did confuse a ‘what’ and ‘when’ question relating to listening to music.  Unfortunately his answers were very short so it was difficult to get a clear idea of what he is capable of grammatically so he must try to push himself harder with his answers in future. One area he should consider revising is how to express different free time activities such as ‘I like playing soccer’/ ‘I play soccer’.

15.) Mohamad Hosein Rahimi Nejad

Mohamas Hosein’s pronunciation is fine and he has adequate topic-specific vocabulary, although he must be sure not to confuse his nouns and verbs. He seemed quite nervous during the interview and it was necessary for me to repeat a number of my questions and speak fairly slowly in order for him to understand. Mohamad Hosein should spend some time focusing on obtaining some more general vocabulary and work on is his listening skills in his free time. He must also revise some of the basic grammar rules in English including subject verb agreements with the verbs ‘to have’ and ‘to be’.

16.) Nasrin Akbari

Nasrin listened carefully to my questions and tried hard to expand her answers. She used ‘would like to...’ for a hypothetical future desire which worked well and was able to provide a wide range of both family-based and more general vocabulary without hesitation. An area where Nasrin made repeated mistakes was in her verb choice such as ‘I’m black eyes’.  She should really try to focus her attention on this going forward. She must also avoid the common mistake of adding ‘old’ at the end of an expression of how long you have been doing something for.

17.) Sahar Ardeshri

Sahar’s pronunciation is fine and she was able to provide some good reasons for why she exercises.  She tried hard to expand her answers as much as possible but was held back by a lack of vocabulary. This should be her focus going forward, along with attention to her use of plurals nouns and personal pronouns.

18.) Reza Farzaneh

Reza has a good level of topic-specific vocabulary and was willing and able to expand his answers thoughtfully as a result. He included the structure ‘I wish I had a brother’ which is excellent to see at this level and included a couple of different expressions of frequency. Reza struggled slightly with understanding my questions so I would recommend he consider some listening practice in his free time. He must also remember the verb ‘to have’ is used when describing someone’s physical appearance, rather than ‘to be’.

19.) Afshin Rostami

Afshin used contractions well throughout his interviews and clearly has a good range of vocabulary which he was able to put to good use in expanding his answers such as providing the advantages and disadvantages of both small and large families, which was interesting. On more than one occasion Afshin made the mistake of incorrectly including the verb ‘to be’ which is a common error at this level but nevertheless, one he must seek to remedy going forward. He must also watch out for his he/she subject mix up.

20.) Raziyeh Rasool Zade

Raziyeh’s pronunciation is very good and her subject verb agreements were accurate throughout the interview. She has a nice range of vocabulary but must be aware of confusing similar language such as ‘to look alike’ and ‘to look like...’. Although her speaking skills are excellent, Raziyeh must spend some time practising her listening skills as they are causing her to misunderstand and subsequently, mis-answer questions at this point.

21.) Zahra Bahrami

Zahra’s pronunciation is fine and she was able to use pre-rehearsed, fixed phrases well in response to suitable questions. She seemed very nervous during the interview and required numerous repetitions of my questions, which was not helped by her lack of vocabulary. She found it very difficult to construct her own sentences so did the best thing by relying on stock responses but she will need to spend some time on this, along with obtaining more vocabulary, if she wishes to progress.

22.) Masoomeh Shekoohi

Masoomeh’s pronunciation is fine and she was able to include useful expressions such as ‘to look alike’ when describing the physical appearance of her family members. Her subject verb agreements were generally accurate and she did some agreement mistakes. Going forward, Masoomeh needs to work on her listening skills in English and should try to get as much listening practice done in her free time as possible. She also needs to work harder on expanding her answers in future speaking assessments.

23.) Saiid Sadri

Saiid tried hard to expand his answers and was able to include useful, pre-rehearsed phrases such as ‘I’m an only child’. He used the past simple accurately when referring to what his father used to do and self-corrected some he/she subject mistakes. Saiid would find expressing what he wants to say much easier if he worked towards obtaining some more vocabulary. He would also benefit from some extra listening practice in his free time.

24.) Ali Asghar Zare

Ali’s  verb usage was very good when switching between ‘to have’ and ‘to be’  in describing his family members and almost all his subject verb agreements were correct. His range of vocabulary is fine for this level and was able to include some varied expressions of frequency. Unfortunately,  he asked me to repeat almost all of my questions before giving himself the chance to think about what I had asked or trying to work through the question itself. Maybe some extra listening practice would help with this by increasing his confidence in listening.

25.) Farshad Moaref

Farshad is very relaxed when speaking in English and, once he established what the question was I was asking, we were able to have a very natural-flowing conversation as a result. Unfortunately however, the high level of fluency created when speaking was damaged by his continual request for repetitions of questions before he had allowed himself the time to think about or try and work out the question. He should have more confidence in his listening skills and pay more attention to listening carefully the first time around. Maybe some extra listening practice would help with this by increasing his confidence in listening. He must also spend some time revising his sentence structure.
