                                                             Feedback: Level 7Groups 2 & 3

1-Maryam Safaei

Maryam used suitable vocabulary to answer the questions. She used some good phrases, such as “I can’t stand them,” “ you interact with them…” “ when you don’t pay attention…”

In the introduction there was an error, as Maryam said “accountanant”.

Grammar was average. “that means know and respect…” should be “that means knowing and respecting countries…” –the gerund is needed.

Simple errors such as not using the verb ‘to be’, for example, “when you mouth full of food.” Also, “more important than other something” should be “…than anything else.”

       I’m accountanant

1-Cultural literacy, that means know and respect to country and culture from another city and nation, when you respect and know about them you interact with people very well. When you go to another place that don’t know about culture, you interact with them very well.

2-…very rude behaviour. When you are eating you make sounds with   mouth and burp. I hate them I can’t stand them. Such as don’t cover mouth when your mouth full of food. When you don’t pay attention and don’t respect older people and culture from another country.

7…in meeting and formal meeting it is more important than other something. When I have an appointment for a doctor or something it is important.

13.i use conventional medicine.my grandmother used to use herbal  therapy. I believe it is better because it is better because scientists have tested it many times. Older people believe it is better because it is of nature.

10. I don’t know how I can describe it. For example, for marriage in the past it was a tradition mother and boys had a proposal girls and they got engaged. Now its v different. Now boys and girls meet other and after that they decide to marry and after that they say to parents we are going to marry.

2.Omid  Zare

Omid’s fluency was fairly good, and grammar was fairly good. Especially good was the use of the gerund, “cultural literacy is knowing….and respecting…”. Omid used past and present tenses but he needed to use the present perfect to talk about how culture has changed. Vocabulary was sufficient, but answers could have been longer.

Cultural literacy is knowing about others’ culture and respecting their culture when you interact with others and knowing about rules.

1-In my culture its taboo to eat meat of some animals, like pig or dog. Its taboo to drink alcohol.

2-Etiquette is rules and something you should do it, when you interact with others.

When you’re eating with others you shouldn’t make sounds, it’s a kind of table manner.

7. yes, it’s very important because others have any voice, and we should respect to other and be on time.

8. yes, when you see other… you shouldn’t shake hands with them. With women? Yes, with women.

 10. in my country culture changed. Some culture changed this year. Some culture was old and its not important in this world. Some culture wasn’t past but now it is in my culture.

Can yougive me some examples? In the past people , for example, the…culture, it wasn’t in past but now people know driving rules.

Can you think of anything else?

No.

Fluency and pron- (just driving and women I had problems with)

3.Saeed Pazira

Saeed gave lovely examples in his answers, which made him stand out above the other students. Some grammar points were excellent, such as “before eating” (the use of the gerund after ‘before’, and perfect phrases like “if we respect other people they respect us too.” Errors, such as not using the gerund after like, for example “like say hello” should be “like saying hello…” Also, Saeed failed to use the past tense to talk about the past.

3. Etiquette is rule of polite behaviour like say hello to everyone and be polite in the classroom. Example like pass your cheque on time, don’t honk in the front of the hospital.

6.yes saying begin the name of the God before eating and use fork and spoon and wait for all of the people in the home that they come and then start eating or washing the hands.

4.i think something like tell lies or fighting in the street or push others in the line.

9. it is important because if we respect other people they respect us too and if we have …we can communicate with other people easy, easily, and  I think,

10. we travel with some animals but now we travel with airplane and cars and we eat lunch on the floor but now we eat on the table and children behave easily to our parents. In the past or now? Now is good than past.

4.Mahbube Keshavarzi

Mahube was able to give examples and use appropriate vocabulary. Mahbube had some good uses of grammar, for example using “shouldn’t” effectively and using the gerund well, for example, “it’s about having information…it’s being on time…”

Some errors such as, failing to use the gerund after ‘when’, in “when eating…”, also error with “I am going to Japanese”, should be “I am going to Japan.” Some problems with past tense. Also, Mahbube had trouble understanding me with question 7 and question 8.

6. table manners is rules of polite behaviour for example we shouldn’t talk when eat and when we shouldn’t eat food with hand.

1.its about having information and knowledge about different, and culture and rules, knowing rules of etiquette. For example, I am going to go Japanese, I should know Japanese rules about different things.

7.punctuality is about rules about polite behaviour. Its being on time in other country. Is important to you? Excuse me? Is it important? Excuse me? Important. Important. Oh important. Yes It is really important to me. In my country. And in other country. For job or for appointment with other.

8.excuse me. I repeated. Women should wear a scarf and men shouldn’t shorts in street. When men and women meet what should they do? Men and woman meeting, when meeting someone first on time, it is hi, how are you? No handshakes.

10. 50 years ago its cheap things , but now its expensiv things, and 50 years old, woman weren’t wear scarf but now woman should wear a scarf.

5.Neda Bazargan

Neda was able to answer questions fairly well, but she should have given longer examples. She lost marks because she didn’t give examples of table manners, or explain why punctuality is important. I also needed to hear more about how culture has changed. There were also problems with not using the past tense correctly or at all in question 10.

3. ok. Etiquette is rules polite behaviour. For example, table manner. Table manner is rules of polite behaviour. For example when eating with other people. And punctuality is important to you.

Yes is punctuality is important to you. Because I am on time. Why is it important? Because I’m on time and time is very good and important to me.

10. 50 years ago women weren’t wear scarf but now women should wear a scarf. 50 years ago they cheap things but now they very expensive.

Has the money changed? Is it different money? Its…and now its …

2.our country is Islamic. You know Islamic is taboo food or drink. For example, pork meat and alcohol.

11.there is a uniform…

13.herbal therapy is very good, because they pills… and natural.

Do you have herbal therapy? Do you use herbal therapy? Yes, its teese…(me: what?...)

Teese..(.i didn’t understand.)

6. Saeed Sheikhi

Saeed spoke well; conversation was at a good pace. He used gerunds well in the first question “knowing about and respecting…following…” Saeed was able to give good examples, but he should have given more information. Saeed lost marks because he didn’t use present perfect or simple past in question 10.

1. knowing about and respecting the culture of others and following the rules of etiquette when interacting with them.

3.for example, when we want  travel to other countries we should know about etiquette of their cultures and know about their polite behaviour and table manners.

Can you give me some examples of polite behaviour? When we can be on time, and speak with polite words and when we want eating we don’t make noise .

7. yes of course. Always I am , when I want to visit my friends, always I trying to be on time, I hate if my friend doesn’t want to be on time.

10. I think all things are changed. Social technology, the culture of driving, clothes. How has social technology changed? For example , few years ago when we wanted to go other city we use horse, but now we use car and plane. What else has changed. For example, cell phone. 50 years ago I think we haven’t portable cell phone.

Is that important? It changed people’s lives. How? For example, the news its faster for me, and I can tell to other with cell phone.

13. I prefer herbal therapy because it doesn’t have a bad effect on the body,

7. Somayeh Mahmodi

Somayeh was able to answer questions confidently. Vocab was really good; words such as “slurp” and “cough and sneeze” , also a nice phrase: “we keep our culture alive.” One vocab problem: number 11 “in the last” should be “in the past”. Somayeh should have been able to provide some examples of how culture has changed in question 10.

Knowing about and respecting of culture of others and following the rules of etiquette.

3...such as table manners and in my country when people meet someone for the first time they say hello and its important to my culture and table manners, they don’t like drop and slurp and etc.

8...yes, when you meet women you shake hands and when you meet men you shouldn’t shake hands. You call people with title.

You don’t kiss? Yes, kissing and shaking hands is not taboo for women.

11 .in the last people wore free dress like short skirt for women because they are freedom and in now people women shouldn’t wear skirt and they should wear uniform and scarf and men shouldn’t wear shorts in park and office.

10. ..not change. Because we keep our culture alive and we respect old people and culture shows me or our identity and it’s important to keep our culture.

13. When I cough and sneeze I prefer conventional medicine such as cough medicine or tablets, and if my back hurts I use chiropractor.

8. Aslan Ghorbani

Aslan stood out positively, because he had good, unique answers, giving lots of examples. Grammar was generally good, helping the conversation to flow well. One vocab error was “handshaking” instead of “handshake”. He also said “last” instead of “past”/”before”.  Aslan lost marks by not using the past tense at times.

3. the rules of good behaviour for example Iranian people like a short and firm handshaking and they don’t ask about the religion of people they don’t know and we don’t talk to girls in the street …

4.i should say, laughing loudly in a special place for example restaurant. We shouldn’t enter mosque with shoes in Iran and taking pictures without people’s permission.

10.by improving technology. Tech has a big effect to changing the world, and traditional things disappeared. And people have a lot of change from old people. Cars and house. We have a different culture from the last and everything changed in the last 50 years.

11.these days we have some factories and some companies that make dress for people how they want. But in the past we don’t have any companies to buy from it. These days the design was so professional but in the past we haven’t this choice in the past everything was simple

9.it is so important because if we want to travel about other countries we should respect their culture if we want successful in our life knowing about their culture is so important. Do as romans do. It means we should know about their culture to have a good time there.

13. c m is based on science and experience shows it is good.

15.copy or posting our paper to other universities. Going to some place that help like gym or sport club.

9.  Forud Ilani

Forud spoke confidently and conversation flowed nicely. Forud used good vocab, such as “essential”, “get off on the wrong foot”. A couple of vocab errors included “customary” instead of “customs” and “choose” instead of “choice”. Forud failed to use the present perfect tense in question 10.

1.knowing about other culture and it is important and essential to interact with other and includes etiquette, and if we don’t know about this maybe our relationship get off on the wrong foot.

3.we have some etiquette in our country. Iranian people prefer short handshake and you shouldn’t choose someone with …finger and when you visit someone for the first time you don’t ask about their religion or something like this.

6. I think if we eating on a table we shouldn’t slurp or burp and when we are eating we shouldn’t speak.

9.we can have a relationship with them.

10..i think every culture changed by go the years. I think our culture changed because tech and science changed every culture. Revolution has more effect in culture. Our country has revolution in the past.  How did the revolution change Iranian culture? Everything in our country religious rules and our government pay attention religious for work and it has effect in our life.

11.yes in the past we have more traditional clothe and customary and now we use factory made. Because we have a lot of chance for choosing.

5.i prefer buy my clothes because its better and we have a lot of choose,

.

10.  Saeed Yusefi Absent

11. Peinan Ghani

Peinan was able to answer questions confidently, and give good examples. Peinan gained marks for using the words “essential” and “progress”. He also used the adverb ‘badly’ well in the phrase “your relationship starts badly.” A grammar issue was that Peinan did not use the verb ‘to be’ in some sentences, such as “if you eating” and “you invited to party”. He also lost marks for not using “shouldn’t” in question 1.  He also misused ‘punctuality’, as he needed to say “I’m punctual”.

1. You know it’s about knowing about other culture and it’s important including etiquette. It’s essential for everyone. If you don’t know about cultural relationship your relationship start badly. Etiquette (he said eticute)  for example if you visit someone for first time you don’t talk about salary, age, and for table manner if you eating something you should cover your mouth you know if you for example you invited party you should …take off your shoes…you know…

7.yes, I’m punctuality, I think that punctuality progress it’s the improvement of society for example I am punctuality man and if somebody late I’m angry.

10.you know Iran we have a lot of change. In the past 50 years old people travelled with horse, but now people travelling with car. In the past people sending message with envelope and now with cell phone, for the evolution Iranian people now conserve the hjjab, it means wearing the scarf, but now not.

12. Elham Gholami

Elham was able to answer all questions with an appropriate example; however, she spoke too quickly. I would advise her to speak more slowly and think carefully about how she is forming her sentences to avoid errors. Some good phrases, such as “be aware” and “following the rules of the culture”, although remember you should say “you need to be aware OF this.” Be careful to use the present simple tense after when and should/n’t. Also, remember the past tense in question 10.

…is knowing about culture and when you visiting another country you be aware about this and following the rules of the culture when interact with them, it’s essential for relationship with others.

3. etiquette is rule it’s important for example you take off your hat when meeting person, it includes punctuality, if you have appointment with other person you should be on time, table manners you shouldn’t eating while you’re talking.

8. yes for example women have to, must wear scarf but men no, but men haven’t any, any rules that men have.

10.yes, everything change, for example in the past people travelling with animals but now we can travelling with bus, train, airplane, the communication with other people is change, in the past we haven’t cell phone or computers, but now we have so communication is comfortable.

13. I prefer c m because it is strongly

15. Copy service, binding and finishing and document business …

13. Maryam Zarei

Maryam gave good examples in her answers and used appropriate vocabulary. The problem with this conversation was the incorrect grammar, which made sentences sometimes difficult to understand; for example, question 1 and 4. Question 3-remember to use possessive pronoun, ‘his or her’. Good attempt at the present perfect in question 10. It was almost correct-just don’t use ‘very’-say ‘the culture has changed a lot.’ Then remember to use the simple past tense for describing the past.

1. Cultural literacy is knowing about and respecting the culture of the other people and when you go to another country can do with interacting with other people;

3. When you go to another house such as your first relationship it is better to take off your shoes to go to her or him house. When you go to china it is better to bow (pronounced boh ) to someone.

To respect someone and another people in another country.

1.                 Yes, when two people talk to each other it is offensive to go two people to talk to one of them, when the people go on the street …out the mouth.

6. As a matter of fact it’s better to at first elder people beginning and start eating food after that another people. Another example I don’t remember. Use fork and spoon for eating and don’t speaking when people talking. Just this.

10. The culture has very changed. It’s better than the past. The clothes is very traditional in the past but now is very colourful and modern and about behaviour it’s very polite in past but now its relaxed behaviour.

13. I use both of them, but I think it’s better to avoid taking any strong medicine and use herbal therapy. Why? It useful because it’s a source of planet its good for body but conventional medicine is chemical and it’s not good for body and in the future has bad result in the body.

14. Faranak Khodadadi

There were some technical problems in this interview; however, I don’t think this was the main cause of the errors. Faranak showed problems in understanding, for example question 15 when I asked him what he would advise me to eat. Faranak was able to use appropriate vocabulary to answer the questions but sentences were not clear, for example, number 14, and answers were short.

Job, ask about the weather and ask about…sound cut off

No, in my country religion is dangerous for small talk

4 .I’ve bought horse back riding it’s very exciting for me. Was it dangerous? Yes v dangerous for me… but I like , I very like.

15. Tourist, we go top of the , we take a picture, we go sightseeing and go to the top of and try food. (I asked: What food would you advise me to try?)  I like indian food.

14. my country show stop, and goodbye, and show calm.

13. yes, I , the hotel has many service for example mini bar and room service and bell service and internet connection and pool and sauna, is important to me.

15.Ali Golrokhian

\Ali tried hard to answer the questions, and he showed an average understanding and ability to use appropriate vocabulary. Some vocab was especially good, for example ‘moderately priced’ and ‘culture sensitive’ (although it should be ‘culturally sensitive.’) Fluency was a problem, because Ali made many pauses and sentences lacked good grammar.

1. Firm handshake, kiss.

Didn’t understand.( I repeated question). Talk about family or work.

2. my culture is modest. (Technical  fault.)

3. culture is modest, and people my country usually pleasure in religion and culture because its …

(I repeated question.) Yes it is important for me. (Why?) I know and I find out local gestures for other country and I am being kind try being uh uh …, other , I …. I know too find a local gestures and I like to know…try being culture sensitive. I usually

It’s important for me I like to know other cultures, I like to travel and I like to know more cultures, I usually when  go to travel I usually find out the local gestures and let body talk for communication , for better communication.

11. if I travel with colleague and friend  I prefer to use moderately priced and if I travel  with my family I prefer to go all expensive.

12. I usually I prefer to use airport shuttle and internet connection and business centre because I need to check emails every day and i prefer to use fitness and make up the room.

16. Forugh Afghahi

Although Forugh’s answers were short, but grammar was generally very good and vocabulary was also good. Forugh gained marks for using ‘avoid’ and the gerund, and for using the present perfect. Errors included forgetting ‘you’ in ‘when respect customs’ and forgetting ‘go’ in ‘I’d like to Italy’. Good words such as ‘communicator’ and ‘cleanlines’.

1 .it’s suitable to talk about age weather and salary but avoid asking personal question person family.

3. it’s v important because when respect customs of other countries you can make a better communicator.

5. no I’ve never been abroad. Would you like to go abroad? Yes, very much. Where? At first, I’d like to Italy at first

11. which has best service and a low price.

12. at first I think cleanliness and then price and location

14. yes very important , because your friendship may get off on the wrong foot.

17.Elahe Moshiri

One problem was the beginning of the interview. I asked Elahe to tell me her name, and she gave me a full introduction. (A note to all students:  When I ask people to say their name, they should just say their name please!) Elahe answered questions with confidence and fluency was good. She used some good words, such as ‘daredevil’ and ‘common’. Problems with grammar included not using the simple past or present perfect tenses when needed, or the conditional ‘I very like’ instead of ‘I would like to…’

1.ask about education, weather, job, not salary, its not common, and ask about age for Iranian women its not common.

4.i’m a daredevil person and its so exciting my life, for example,  3 months ago I’m driving a bus to university!

5.no, I’m not. Would you like to go abroad? Yes I very like. Where? I like to go to California.

12.i think so fitness centre and room service, internet connection and laundry.

15.(i asked twice , she didn’t understand. I worded it differently.)

You should know the cultures and customs and gestures of Iranian when you come to iran. For example, women light and short handshakes, with kissing and hug, but with man and firm handshake.

18. Mahmud reza Akhlagh Alam

Fluency in this interview was great-speech was comfortable, confident and natural. Mahmud Reza was able to answer questions easily and give concise answers. Mahmud had problems understanding ‘abroad’, but he answered fairly well in the present perfect in question 5. The only error there was saying ‘in’ instead of ‘to’. Vocab errors included ‘suite’ instead of ‘en-suite’, but a good attempt. Also, ‘historic’ instead of ‘historical’ , and the noun ‘handshake’ instead of the verb ‘shake hands’.

1.talk about the weather, the name, something like that.

2.i don’t think so, its good to talk about religion.

5.(he didn’t understand ‘abroad’)-yes I’ve been in Malyasia and in London, and Dubai. What did you think about London? Its perfect, I hope to live there. My cousins all of them live them, for around 5 and 6 years. What did you see in London? Its about 5 years ago, and I don’t remember place I visited. I saw the big watch.

11.i prefer to stay in a hotel with 5 stars and a suite room because its like my house and I’m comfortable there.

12. gym, pool, disco

15.advice to visit historic place, and I suggest before they come I suggest to know the culture, because most of the things is taboo. For example, you can’t handshake, only man with man and women with women

14. important gestures are say hello.

19. Hosein Rezaei

Hosein impressed me with his wide vocabulary, when describing his personal experiences. Particularly good words were ‘appropriate’, ‘untouched’, ‘bare hands’, ‘conditions’, ‘fan of’. Hosein also used the past tense generally well. Grammar was great. Be careful to use the singular in question 3-you need to say ‘another country’.

Its so important when you want to travel to another countries and you know the culture of that country because if you don’t know something important for that country and if something is not appropriate for that country they maybe don’t have good feeling about..

Yes I like to do exciting or dangerous things. Last summer me and two other friends went to a forest, its untouched forest and we brought guns with us and we camp for at least one week and one of my friends hunted down a boar and we barbecued them.

I like to live in dangerous conditions, you should make fire with your bare hands.

11. I’m not a big fan of hotels, just good behaviour of staff and don’t ask for tips, just nice bed and free internet access.

Do you prefer camping to a hotel? Yes, if you go abroad for working or conference you must stay at hotels but if you go to see jungles or mountains I should camp there and I will not go to hotel.

20. Mehrdad Karimi

Mehrdad struggled in this interview; he wasn’t able to understand my questions on a number of occasions and his answers were too short. I needed to keep asking questions to get more information from him. Good attempt at the present perfect, but you need to use ‘have’. Question 15- say ‘cities’.

Talk about weather and education and job.

3. (he didn’t understand.)

4.i don’t like driving licence but I like driving very fast on the street.

5 (.he didn’t understand.) I never been to another country. (Would you like to?) Yes, (where?) London. (Why?) Because the weather is good and people in London is good people.

12. I use internet connection and phone and just this.

15.  I don’t know.. You should go and see city in Iran. Just this. (what should I see?) Parks, museum.

7. I don’t have free time because I’m a student.

21. Javad Mohamadpoor

Javad made some errors in his grammar, but he attempted complex grammatical structures, which was good. For example, question 1 ‘non verbal is important as just speaking’- you need to use another ‘as’ before important. But I was impressed with your attempt. Also, good attempt at the passive in question 4. The problem was you needed to say ‘were’ because bicycles is plural.

About other things and is we talk about weather, and we talk about business.

3. we should know other cultures, because cultures as non-verbal is important as just speaking. Gesture is important. We should learn other gestures in other countries before we want to learn language. (can you tell me some gestures?) A small handshake is one gesture in Iran.

4.i don’t have dangerous in my life but I have , when I was a child me and my friend was riding a bicycle and we had a accident. Our bicycles was damaged.

11. Bedroom is important and location. I like a king size bed and laundry and internet service.

I like hotel that near beach and located in downtown, it’s better for me.

22.Lida Omran

Lida spoke confidently and conversation was natural and flowed nicely. Lida used the present simple tense well, and she used a good variety of adjectives. A good use of the comparative in question 14. One error was incorrectly using the negative in the present simple tense. For example, in question 1 Lida needed to say ‘they don’t do any exercise’. Also, question 11 3rd person ‘relaxes me’, and the pronunciation of ‘steal’ in question 13 needs improving. An overall great interview to finish with!

4. I’m a tennis coach and this is very very exciting for me and I work every day. Why is it exciting? Because its very fun and the exercise is stay me in shape and I’m healthy with exercise and I’m not sick.

1. No, because I wake up at 7 o clock and I go to work every day.

What is a couch potato? When the people sit every day or every time see the TV and not exercise and not do exercise and not anything exercise.

5.i get up , I wake up at 7 o clock and I brush my teeth, I take a shower and I eat breakfast and I get ready and go to work every day.

8. i wear casual clothes because I am a coach. I wear sport shoes and pants and uniform and scarf.

11. i prefer relaxing vacation because I work hard every day and I need relaxing vacation so I get massage and I eat healthy and delicious food and go beautiful pool and go through the gardens, it relax me.

13. Maybe the weather is terrible, they cancelled the flight, someone steal (stel) my wallet or the people are unfriendly.

14. I usually stay in hotel because I think hotel is safer than other place. It has waiter and many people in the hotel, and they help me.
